Meta House, Inc., Shelter for Women with Dependent Children
Meta House, Inc. is a non-profit organization engaging in advocacy and
education of women and their dependent children, providing transitional and
permanent housing, as well as outpatient drug and alcohol treatment, for
homeless mothers with substance abuse and mental health disorders. Founded
in 1963, Meta House has expanded the number of apartments available to
homeless families headed by women in recovery from substance abuse problems
and provided new training and educational opportunities for them, including
an on-site Literacy Center. Their newest services include an in-home
parenting assistance and youth counseling program for women and their
children who have multiple physical and emotional difficulties, and issues
maintaining their home and work duties while continuing the on-going
process of recovery. This year, Meta House received the 2003 Children Come
First Award from the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families, and a
March of Dimes Wisconsin Chapter grant to support pregnant and post-partum
mothers with substance-use disorders.
Hurtado, S.C. has provided pro bono assistance to Meta House in
preparing and negotiating construction contracts and assisted in ongoing
construction performance advice for two phases of their permanent housing
facilities program.
